The fabric for fleece is pile, which refers to a fabric with loops, strands or tufts of yarn standing up. It originates from Patagonia founder, Yvon Chouinard, wanting to create a garment that was more practical and durable than wool, which was heavy, slow to dry, and difficult to clean.
After experimentation with fabric – including rumour has it stiff-backed polyester, which is intended for toilet seat covers – the pile sweater was born in the 1970s and became the new staple for mid-layer insulation.
