Hush launches first ever Intern Collection

Sustainable womenswear brand debuts capsule designed by interns

In perfect time for summer, Hush is celebrating young emerging talent in a showcase of its first ever Intern Collection. The nine-piece capsule is set to launch on Hush’s website on May 17. On the same day a showcase event will take place at Hackney Empire.

Five interns across Hush’s design, buying, merchandising, garment technology, sustainability and marketing teams have worked on this collection over their year-long paid placement programme that started in 2020.

Sustainability intern, Meg C was one of the lucky five to work on this collection. She says: “The intern programme gave me insight, perspective and invaluable knowledge. It was a crash course into an industry I am incredibly proud to be a part of.”

Bold colours, bright prints and swinging 60s styles dominate this collection. Last year’s design intern, now promoted to assistant designer at the brand, Issy H created the poppy floral print featured throughout the collection.

Hush was founded in 2003 by Australian born, London-based Mandy Watkins. The brand claims to be one of the UK’s leading online sustainable fashion retailers. With this collection, the brand backs up its ethical credentials by encouraging young talent.

Watkins said: “Everyone here is so excited to see what our interns have achieved, and we cannot wait to share the results of their talents and hard work with the launch of our first ever Intern Collection.” She adds: “I love that we can give the interns the opportunity to explore their creativity.”

The Intern Collection is set to run annually and the brand will run the programme again with its next set of interns, who are in the process of creating next year’s capsule.

Meanwhile, current marketing intern, Skye Smith says: “As marketing is at the end of the process when it comes to creating a collection, I have not added much to the current collection. But I have mostly been planning all aspects of marketing for last year’s Intern Collection, as that is the one launching May 17.”

As well as showcasing the Intern Collection, the launch event held at Hackney Empire on May 17 celebrates Hush’s partnership with Hackney Empire’s Creative Futures Programme. This initiative supports young artists and creatives from one of London’s most diverse communities and is designed to prioritise emerging talent. The initiative will also benefit from 20 per cent of the profits from the sale of the Intern Collection.
